August

Year of Japan logo

Special Event: 2nd Annual Hiroshima Memorial Day -- August 5th

co-sponsored by the Western New York Peace Center, The Year of Japan Committee and the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society

The event includes a FREE screening of the HBO documentary film, WHITE LIGHT, BLACK RAIN: THE DESTRUCTION OF HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI at 7pm followed by a brief memorial service with floating lanterns at Mirror Lake adjacent to the Japanese Garden behind the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society.

White Light, Black Rain is an 86 minute documentary directed by Steven Okazaki that provides a graphic, unflinching look at the reality of nuclear warfare through first-hand accounts of both survivors and American men who carried out the bombing missions.

Immediately following the film at approximately 8:50 PM a floating lantern ceremony will commence at the edge of Mirror Lake in the Japanese Garden located behind the Historical Society Building.

This free event is being co-sponsored by the Western New York Peace Center, Friends of the Japanese Garden of Buffalo and the Historical Society. Although the event is free and open to the public, because of graphic and sometimes disturbing material presented in the film, adults are advised not to bring children below the age of thirteen to see it. Children of any age are encouraged to participate in the lantern ceremony taking place in the Japanese Garden after the film.

HBO film White Light, Black Rain

"In August 1945 the world was transformed in the blink of an eye when American forces dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, causing unprecedented destruction, and precipitating the end of World War II.

In this extraordinary HBO documentary film, Academy Award winning filmmaker Steven Okasaki (Days of Waiting), presents shocking archival footage withheld by the US military for decades, stunning photography and heartrending interviews - from both Japanese survivors and the Americans who thought their involvement would help end a brutal conflict - for a deeply moving look at the painful legacy of the first use of nuclear weapons in war."

Performance: Theatre of Yugen -- October 3rd

The Asian Studies Program at the University at Buffalo is working in cooperation with Buffalo Seminary, a leading private school in the region, to bring Theatre of Yugen to Buffalo.

Theatre of Yugen is based in San Francisco. It is an experimental ensemble dedicated to portraying the spirit of yugen, commonly expressed in Noh theater of Japan and in Kyogen, short comic plays conducted in interludes between the acts of a Noh performance.

Theatre of Yugen will bring six actors for a performance of a newly created piece adapted by Lluis Valls titled Llanto which revisits Federico Garcia Lorca's famous ode to a dying bullfighter. Combining the contemplative restrained power of Noh drama and movement with the fiery passion of Flamenco guitar, Llanto delves deep into the mystery of memory, life and death. How we live our lives is how we live on.

Llanto is accompained by the Kyogen play, Shuron (A Religious Dispute).
